Project Description

IT’S JUST YOUR STANDARD SHOW. (Variety – 1 hour). Title is a play on words. Standard not only means ‘the norm’, it also refers to a classic song – a standard. This Variety show has new performers singing standard songs. Each week has a theme i.e.: The Beatles, West Side Story, Rogers & Hammerstein. A CD/download will be released after every show.

SHOW PROPOSAL
NAME: “It’s Just Your Standard Show”

Type: Musical – 1 hour
Note: In this case, the word ‘Standard’ refers to a song that is considered a classic. But at the same time makes the reader wonder if the show’s producers are saying that their show is ‘standard’ – meaning average.

PREMISE: MUSIC SHOW WHERE SINGERS PERFORM SONGS THAT THEY HAVE NOT RECORDED AND ARE NOT ASSOCIATED WITH. MOSTLY IT WILL BE YOUNGER PERFORMERS SINGING OLDER SONGS.

EACH SHOW WOULD HAVE A THEME: I.E. –
BEATLES, ARETHA, MOTOWN, SINATRA, ROLLING STONES, THE WOMEN’S MOVEMENT (I’M EVERY WOMAN, WOMAN IN CHAINS, I AM WOMAN, ETC.), MOVIE SONGS, BROADWAY SONGS, FAMOUS DUETS, LOVE SONGS, POLITICAL SONGS, SONGS OF THE 40’s, 50’s, 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, 90’s, ETC., “MY FAVORITE SONG”, EAGLES, LINDA RONSTADT, WOMEN OF COUNTRY, MEN OF COUNTRY, CHRISTMAS, FOLK MUSIC, WOODSTOCK SONGS, JONI MITCHELL, BLUES

BUT THERE WOULD BE SHOWS WHERE OLDER PERFORMERS WOULD SING “STANDARDS” OF NEWER PERFORMERS – “OLD MEETS NEW”. FOR EXAMPLE, ROD STEWART WOULD SING A JOHN MAYER HIT, ELTON JOHN WOULD SING A JOHN LEGEND HIT, ETC.

ALSO EVERY SHOW WOULD HAVE A “MYSTERY GUEST”. THIS WOULD BE WHERE ACTORS, NOT KNOWN FOR SINGING, WOULD PERFORM. NOTE: SEE PERFORMANCES FROM THE INDEPENDENT SPIRIT AWARDS FOR REFERENCE.
PERFORMANCES WOULD BE RECORDED LIVE IF AT ALL POSSIBLE.
SINCE THE “THEMES” OF THE SHOW WOULD BE KNOWN IN ADVANCE, ARTISTS WOULD RECORD A SET AND CONTIBUTE A SONG (OR TWO) TO A NUMBER OF “THEMED” SHOWS. THE ARTIST COULD PICK AND CHOOSE WHICH SHOWS THEY WOULD LIKE TO CONTRIBUTE TO. THEY COULD OPT TO SING A FAVORITE BEATLE TUNE BUT MIGHT NOT WANT TO SING A SINATRA SONG.

FOR EXAMPLE:
The artist is Alicia Keys. She is given a list of upcoming show themes and she selects the one she wants and the song(s) she would like to sing. After consulting with the show’s producers, she performs a set including those themes and songs.
Alicia selects: “Nowhere Man” by the Beatles, “Me and Mrs. (now Mr. Jones)” by Billy Paul, Pink Cadillac by Aretha, “I’m Every Woman” by Chaka Khan, “Twilight World” by Swing Out Sister, “The Greatest Love of All” by Whitney Houston, “Come see about Me” by the Supremes, “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” – Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell DUET with Usher, “Finally” by CeCe Peniston, “Somewhere” from West Side Story, “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” by Brenda Lee (for Christmas Show), “Desperado” by Linda Ronstadt, “Man, I feel like a Woman” by Shania Twain, “Women in Chains” by Tears for Fears.
The set is then edited and song(s) for the appropriately themed shows are input into that show. Performances could also be re-edited for future shows, For example, if there were a show whose theme was “Aretha”, songs from that show could also be used later in a show whose theme was “Women of Motown”
Whenever possible all the shows would be shot at the same club or venue so that when it is edited, it looks as if it was all recorded at the same time. Additionally, the venue could have a “house” band which could supplement the singer’s musicians.
As an alternate, you could also have a set group of younger performers perform the shows songs every week, with only one guest star.
There would be an emcee, who would also perform.
